About the event
Please join us for a traditional Torskeklubben Christmas dinner featuring cod (torsk) and Linie aquavit. Since it's Christmas, we'll also have meatballs and desert.
This month, Natalie M. Van Deusen presents "Yule Lads and Giant Cats: Christmas Traditions in Iceland." Iceland is known for its rich folklore, and much of its best-known lore centres on Christmastime. Natalie will introduce Icelandic Christmas beliefs and traditions, including traditional food and drink. Most of all, she'll talk about the jólasveinar (Yule Lads), their mother Grýla, and jólakötturinn (the Yule Cat).
Natalie is the Henry Cabot and Linnea Lodge Scandinavian Professor at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on Old Norse and early modern Icelandic literature.
